Facebook - Advance Way to Secure your Account

In my previous post, I outlined some of Facebook Security in order for you to detect or " Check if someone is using your Facebook ". Like what I've said before, security in our online life is sometimes the most neglected or overlook part, not knowing  that INTERNET is just like our home that needs protection or security measures to stay away from trouble. You can control your protection as you may wish using some of the advance security features of Facebook. First line of defense is important and You have the power to enforce that. Now we're taking advantage of that Facebook Advance Security, I will show you how....

If you are people on the go and sometimes go to Internet Cafe, Library, just to access your account or using other Computer. Sometimes there is a risk of using other computer because you don't know that it may have a KEY- LOGGER, a type of hacking tools where every stroke in the keyboard or everything you type is recorded thus revealing your sensitive information. So if you want to stay safe use the One time Password ( OTP ), one security feature using your cellphone, where you can request a temporary password to Facebook so that instead of using your normal password, you will use that One time Password provided to you by sms ( text) message. So here's how.

1.  You need to register your cellphone number and get verified.

2. After your number is verified and you want to use the OTP feature, all you have to do is simply compose a message in your cellphone, type OTP and send to a designated number corresponding to your country location, for example here in the Philippines the supported mobile carrier are Globe Telecom and Smart. The code for Smart is 3404 and for Globe is 2933. You will receive the One Time Password (OTP) that you can use temporary when accessing your account. But you are given only 20 minutes time to use that OTP, after it lapsed you will automatically logout from your account and that password cannot be use again.

You can see here the corresponding designated country mobile carrier that Facebook supported for OTP.

With the popularity of mobile devices now, Facebook can be access anytime and anywhere. But what if you lost your mobile device and your Facebook account is still log-in. Anyone who might get your device might open your Facebook account. But don't worry you can still log-out your FB account in your lost device using only simple steps to follow. Here's how.

1. Log-in to your account using any devices, open the security settings. Then go to Mobile set-up. Just click " Lost your Phone " and a pop-up screen will appear that have a confirmation to " Log-out  on Phone " click YES. Your account will be log-out in your lost device.

Another advance security that Facebook have is LOG-IN APPROVAL, it is just like Log-in Notifications that I discussed in " How to check if Someone is using your Facebook Account ", ( I will suggest that you may read first that previous post ), the difference is when you log-in to another computer and browser, it will ask for security code in order for you to access your account, if you failed then you will not access it. So an added security, if you really want to secure your account. How do you turn on this feature ?

1. Go to Settings > Security

2 . Click the Log-in Approval. Check the " Require a security code " option. Just follow the image below to properly set-up the feature.

3. In that process you need to activate and verified your cellphone number, to receive the security code straight to your phone, whenever you wish to access your account in different computer and browser.

4. You may ask " How about if my phone is not available, how will I receive the security code ? ". Just follow again the image to get the detailed steps.

> Settings > Security > Log-in Approvals

It will ask you to supply your Password before you get the set of codes that you will use in case your phone in not available, either print the codes or copy and  keep them safe. After you use the first code, you will not use it again, only once. I'll erased the last digit, coz it is live codes generated using my account.

If all the first set of codes were used, you have again the option to generate another set of codes. Have in mind that  it is safe to have many set of codes, so that when time came that you will not have the option to generate, you will have your extra codes right away in your whenever you need them.

5.  You may ask also, How about if I lost the generated set of codes, is there any other way to get the codes ? Yes . Using your android device. If you have Facebook App that are installed in your device, you may get the codes even you are not connected on the Internet. Just make sure that your account is not log-out when your last used.

The codes are generated every 30 seconds, for better security. You can only use it once.
