Geepas Infrared Burner GK4413 Product Review

With the advent of fuel and other energy sources going up, one might come to think of how to save energy more efficiently and conveniently without sacrificing the daily qualify of life. More and more energy saving technologies are emerging in the market, making our daily life chores easy and exciting. It's along time that we had a problem on how to cut the cost of our energy consumption, particularly in our gas consumption used in cooking. Because of growing price in commodities, me and my wife think of better ways to start searching for efficient energy saving equipment, and we agreed to start in our kitchen, thinking first to replace our cooking stove. So we start searching the latest cooking stove in the market, hoping that it can help us to save energy, thus to save money and have an extra budget for our family. After a long search and comparing other stoves, we found and bought a Geepas "Infrared" Burner.

"Infrared?" Sounds familiar? Before I start elaborating what are the advantages of this stove using Infrared technology, let me explain first the basic of how heat is transferred. These basics can help us to further prove that this technology is more efficient than conventional one.

Basically there are 3 ways of how heat is transferred.

1. Conduction - transfer via direct contact between two objects.
2. Convection - transfer via liquid or gas (air)
3. Radiation - transfer directly via line of sight ( ex. heat coming from the sun)

Now, let's compare the Conventional Burner Stove vs. Infrared Burner Stove.

Conventional burner stoves heat air, and heats radiant material, heats more air, rises and heat your food. My observation was that it doesn't penetrate our food as quickly, although it's capable of generating more heat. Convection method is applied in this kind stove.

Infrared Stove Burner draw it's heat by heating an element, usually ceramic and generate large amount of energy via "Radiation." Energy is transferred line of sight and doesn't need a secondary radiant material like air. This is how heat of the sun is transferred to us. Is this very powerful? Yes. When used in cooking it penetrates our food as quickly and deeply, by using this technology more efficient and energy cost saving are utilized.

In reality conventional burners heats up from warm to hot, but in Infrared burner, warm is negligible, leaving only the heat up process to hot abruptly.

Of-course every technology has Pros and Cons.

Infrared Advantages:

1. Heats up very rapidly unlike the conventional ones.

2. Cooks faster, thus contributes in less cost energy consumption.

3. Safer to used, unlike the conventional, when neglected, the flame will die if blown by air, causing the gas to leak out of the stove burner. This is one of what I liked, you can leave the food while cooking, not worrying the flame will die.

4. Flame will not die even when water or any liquid is put directly into the burner heating element, big advantage too.

5. Bottom of pan will not get burned, this accumulates charcoal looks like, common to many Filipinos cooking pan :), and that explain the conventional flame direct contact.

6. The knob switch is not easily turn, you have to push it before it will turn on, so less worry to your naughty children.

Disadvantages :

1. Temperature control is very difficult, the knob switch has only three options, OFF, ON and LOW. As compare to Conventional burner, you can vary the amount of heat. So you need to pay attention to what you are cooking or else it will turned into ash, burned or overcooked.

Update: May 25, 2015

Regarding of how temperature control may vary, we discovered that it's still possible to lower the amount of heat, by turning the knob to a very low ,turning the knob 270 degrees from off state as a reference point, this will give a very low amount of heat, thus preventing the food for being overcooked. The knob switch indicates only three amount of heat options, OFF, ON (180 degrees turn), LOW ( around 220 degrees turn), but the VERY LOW option is missing in the printed amount of heat selection. Hope that the manufacturer will also included the VERY LOW option to be printed out in the selection, so that the customer will be aware of.

"But still we are very satisfied of how this cooking stove operates and saves time, energy and of-course our budget when it comes to gas consumption, it exceed our expectations."

2. Price is a bit higher, but for me, it's a great investment, later you will cost cut  on your cooking energy consumption and this will gives you extra savings. Practical move, huh!

3. Heating element is a bit fragile compared to conventional.

Overall we are satisfied with this Infrared Burner stove, it cuts our gas energy consumption by 40%, it's a big savings. During early days that we are using conventional stove, our gas tends to last for only a month and five days on average, but now it last for two months, not sacrificing our daily cooking. So another savings and contributes to our budget to buy more food that our family needs.

old cooking stove

Our conventional cooking gas stove, we loved this so much, it reminisced our memories when me and my wife start building a family. But time has come that we need to replace this for a new one with a better technology and to accomodate our big family. :)

Our new Infrared Gas Stove in action.

As you will see the flame is not as you saw in any conventional stove. The flame is an Infrared of Light. So when blown by air or spilled by water or any liquid, the flame remains still. That's a big Advantage, consistent heating even in windy condition or if wet by cooking spill-over.
